Steve McClaren "relieved" after beating Norwich City

Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren admits that he is relieved for the club's supporters after the 6-2 win over Norwich City.

Steve McClaren has admitted that it was a feeling of relief as he watched his Newcastle United side claim a first Premier League victory of the season on Sunday.

Georginio Wijnaldum was the hero for the Magpies as they stormed to an emphatic 6-2 triumph over Norwich City to relieve some of the pressure on McClaren and lift the spirits at St James' Park.

Forced to answer questions about his future in the build-up to the match, McClaren insists that he knew his team would improve sooner rather than later after such a poor start.

"I am relieved for the supporters and players who have endured a lot," he told reporters.

"We knew a win was around the corner, but we didn't know when it would come. We played some really good football. We kept the faith with the players - everyone around us is saying what they've been saying, but we've got to keep tight."

Newcastle will look to build on the win when they meet rivals Sunderland next Sunday.
