Bristol City secure first win of season at Middlesbrough

Bristol City secure their first win of the season with a backs-against-the-wall victory over unbeaten Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

Joe Bryan's early goal has given Bristol City a surprise 1-0 lead over unbeaten Middlesbrough in the Championship clash at the Riverside.

The home side fell behind to the first real chance of the game after just eight minutes when Aaron Wilbraham teed up left-back Bryan, who curled an effort into the top corner.

That was the first time Middlesbrough had fallen behind all season, and they responded well initially with Stewart Downing having a goal disallowed after a high foot from Christian Stuani before Yanic Wildschut saw his shot saved by Ben Hamer.

City should have doubled their lead when Reid missed a glorious opportunity to mark his first league start since March 2014 with a goal, blazing the rebound over after Dimitrios Konstantopoulos had saved Wilbraham's first attempt.

Konstantopoulos had to produce a fine stop to keep out Jonathan Kodjia's effort before Downing fired wide and Hamer saved from Emilio Nsue as Boro began to threaten again.

Hamer prevented Daniel Ayala's header from levelling the scores just before the hour mark and pulled out an even better save to deny Grant Leadbitter's drive as the home side pressed for an equaliser.

Boro had further chances to come away with a point as the away side sat deeper and deeper, but City held on for a first win of the season.
