Mark Hughes: 'Manchester United players do not trust Donny van de Beek'

Former Manchester United forward Mark Hughes says that Donny van de Beek's teammates do not "trust him with the ball".

Former Manchester United forward Mark Hughes has claimed that Donny van de Beek's teammates at Old Trafford 'do not yet trust' the Netherlands international.

Van de Beek was handed a rare chance to start on Tuesday night as United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named him in the first XI for the FA Cup fifth-round clash with West Ham United.

The Dutchman found it difficult to make his mark against the Hammers, though, and was eventually replaced by Bruno Fernandes in the 73rd minute of the contest, which the Red Devils won 1-0.

Hughes has said that the 23-year-old's teammates are currently struggling to "trust him with the ball".

"You just sense... it looks like they don't trust him with the ball yet. When the likes of Fred and [Nemanja] Matic look up and they see [Marcus] Rashford, they see [Anthony] Martial, they see [Mason] Greenwood, who is still a young player but has great talent, it's like they defer to them, their first thought is to pass to them," Hughes told talkSPORT.

"Van de Beek, I haven't seen a great deal of movement, I haven't seen little movements to get in pockets of space, even though you suspect that's the player he is and those are the areas he wants to work in.

"He's been disappointing again. He's playing for Manchester United, a huge club, he's got to show more than he's showing at the moment."

Van de Beek, who arrived at Old Trafford from Ajax over the summer, has only managed one goal and one assist in 25 appearances for United during the 2020-21 campaign.
