Wilfredo Caballero 'surprised' to oust Joe Hart in Manchester City side

Manchester City goalkeeper Wilfredo Caballero admits that he was surprised to be chosen ahead of Joe Hart for the Premier League opener against Sunderland.

Manchester City goalkeeper Wilfredo Caballero has admitted that he was surprised to be chosen ahead of Joe Hart in the starting lineup for this afternoon's Premier League opener against Sunderland.

Recent speculation has suggested that manager Pep Guardiola is looking to bring a new goalkeeper into the Etihad Stadium, and reports that he is unconvinced by Hart gained traction when the England number one was left on the bench for his first competitive match at the helm.

City edged to a 2-1 victory over Sunderland courtesy of a late Paddy McNair own goal, but Caballero believes that they will continue to improve the longer they have under the new boss.

"[Being selected to start] was a surprise for me, I've been training well in pre-season and to have this opportunity to play, I tried to enjoy it today," he told BT Sport.

"We started well with three points. It is better to improve and make a correction when we win. This is a new country, new club for the boss but the ideas and the way to play, we know how he wants to play. We are trying together with the whole squad for maybe only two weeks. But there are a lot of days to keep improving."

Sergio Aguero had given City an early lead at the Etihad Stadium before Jermain Defoe levelled things up with less than 20 minutes remaining.
