Inter Milan hold champions Juventus to a goalless draw at the Allianz Stadium to stay top of the table and extend their unbeaten start to 16 matches.

Top-of-the-table Inter Milan have held champions Juventus to a goalless draw at the Allianz Stadium this evening to extend their unbeaten start to the season to 16 games.

Juventus had ended Napoli's unbeaten record last weekend, but they could not knock off another of the challengers to their long-standing reign as Italian champions this evening.

The point is enough to take Juve above Napoli into second place, with Inter a further two points ahead, they but would end the weekend top of the table should they win their game in hand on Sunday.

The hosts almost broke the deadlock after just nine minutes when Mario Mandzukic got on the end of a cross into the box and forced a save out of Samir Handanovic before then being thwarted on the rebound too as Inter survived their early scare.

The league leaders soon settled into the game, though, and both sides struggled to create clear goalscoring opportunities throughout a tight first half in Turin.

Indeed, it wasn't until the final minute of the half that the next notable chance arrived, but this time it was the woodwork which denied Mandzukic as his header from close range came back off the crossbar.

Juventus's main openings were arriving through crosses into the box, and that avenue again almost provided the opening goal on the hour mark when Juan Cuadrado's header was kept out by Handanovic.

Gonzalo Higuain was the next to come close for the home side as they went in search of a win that would take them top, but he blazed a rare sight of goal over the crossbar as Inter Milan held out for a point in an uneventful second half.

The result sees Juventus's record run of scoring in 44 consecutive Serie A games come to an end, also failing to score in a home league game for the first time since August 2015, while it also gives Napoli the chance to move top with victory over Fiorentina on Sunday.

Juventus (4-3-3): Szczesny; De Sciglio, Benatia, Chiellini, Asamoah; Khedira (Dybala, 75'), Pjanic (Bentancur, 85'), Matuidi; Cuadrado, Higuain, Mandzukic

Inter Milan (4-2-3-1): Handanovic; D'Ambrosio, Skriniar, Miranda, Santon (Henrique, 63'); Vecino, Valero, Candreva (Gagliardini, 69'), Brozovic, Perisic; Icardi (Martins, 86')
