Roy Keane: 'Roy Hodgson should be England psychologist'

Roy Hodgson should be England's sports psychologist ahead of Steve Peters, according to Roy Keane.

Roy Keane has expressed his belief that Roy Hodgson should perform the role of sports psychologist to the England team, rather than Dr Steve Peters fulfilling the role.

Peters was drafted into the Three Lions setup after a successful period working with the Liverpool squad as well as world snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan and Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy.

However, despite his track record, Keane feels that Peters ought to keep a low profile whilst out in Brazil.

He told The Mirror: "The sports psychologist should be the manager. Brian Clough was the best sports psychologist for me and Alex Ferguson was good.

"I heard Peters speak at Wembley two years ago and we should be open-minded and not knock it.

"But don't think, for one minute, that if it gets to penalties in an England game that the players on the pitch are going to look over and forget about Roy Hodgson and look where Steve Peters is and go, 'The chimp is out'."

Keane left his role as a television pundit with ITV on the eve of the World Cup in Brazil.

He has been heavily linked with the assistant manager's position at Aston Villa in recent weeks.
