Football Association chairman David Bernstein rejects claims by defender Rio Ferdinand that the FA are not focused on youth development.

Chairman David Bernstein has insisted that the Football Association are focused on developing youth players throughout English football.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand had claimed that a new strategy needs to be implemented by the FA, but Bernstein has assured the former England international that a "complete programme" is already in place.

Bernstein told PA Sport: "Rio Ferdinand should know that we are putting a huge amount of work in to [youth development].

"We are implementing a complete programme of youth development football within the leagues, with the EPPP system and with the opening of St George's Park. All those things are in hand.

"They are not producing the results yet but they will do. These things take a while as we know but these things are in place there is a huge amount of work taking place and I think potentially we are in a very decent shape."

Ferdinand has also claimed that the England side that he was part of for 14 years weren't good enough to win a major competition.
