Chelsea's Jose Mourinho: 'Steven Gerrard's slip gave Manchester City the title'

Jose Mourinho says that Steven Gerrard's slip against Chelsea last season gifted the Premier League title to Manchester City.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes that Steven Gerrard's famous slip against the Blues at Anfield last season gave the Premier League title to Manchester City.

In the third-to-last league fixture of the season, Liverpool required just a draw to keep their ambitions of sealing their first league title in 24 years on track, but Gerrard lost his footing to allow Demba Ba to latch on and open the scoring.

Chelsea went on to grab a 2-0 win on Merseyside, leaving Liverpool's hopes of winning the league hanging by a thread.

"[Gerrard's slip] gave the title to Man City - it's as simple as that," Mourinho told reporters. "Liverpool, with a point in that match, are champions and because they lost that match they lost the title.

"It meant nothing to us after our defeat against Sunderland. Our position was third position. That match meant just the professional pride - you have to go to every match and try to win."

The two sides will meet again tomorrow, with Chelsea currently holding a 12-point lead over Liverpool in the table.
