Runaway leaders Charlton suffer their first home defeat of the season and second-place Sheffield United also lose as Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield step up the chase on the top two.

The top two sides in League One both lost this evening, with Charlton going down for the first time at home this season while Sheffield United were beaten 3-2 at Walsall.

These dropped points mean that Yorkshire pair Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield had the chance to close the gap on the automatic promotion spots, and they duly obliged with Wednesday running out 4-1 winners over Bury in Dave Jones's first game as manager while Huddersfield nicked a 1-0 win over Hartlepool thanks to Alan Lee's strike 15 minutes from time.

Wednesday move within a point of Steel City rivals United while Huddersfield are a further point back in fourth.

Runaway leaders Charlton were undone by Colchester at the Valley with Anthony Wordsworth and Steven Gillespie scoring either side of half time. The Addicks are still 13 points clear at the top.

Elsewhere, fifth-placed MK Dons suffered their first home defeat at the hands of Yeovil while John Welsh scored a last-minute equaliser for Tranmere in Ronnie Wood's first game back in charge of the club.
