Burnley 'closing in on York City starlet Vinny Steele'

Burnley are reportedly set to complete a move for 16-year-old York City winger Vinny Steele this week.

Burnley are reportedly closing in on the signing of York City youngster Vinny Steele.

The Clarets are set to complete a move for the 16-year-old this week, according to The Mirror.

Steele only joined York from Darlington in February, but he has now informed the club that he wants to leave this summer.

The winger is not yet on a professional contract and, because York are non-league, they will not be due any compensation for the player – should he decide to leave.

"This is a great opportunity for Vinnie to move to a Premier League club and we wish him all the best," York sporting director Dave Penney told reporters.

"Burnley have complied with all the rules and gave seven days' notice, last week, of their intentions to approach the player. Both Vinnie and his agent will now be free to talk to Burnley's representatives on Wednesday.

"As we are no longer protected by the EPPP, we have little protection against the biggest clubs when it comes to holding on to our best young players."

Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Huddersfield Town, Southampton and the North-East's big three Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough are amongst the clubs to have shown an interest in landing Steele.
