Brentford remain top after Port Vale win

Goals from Marcello Trotta and Will Grigg ensure that Brentford remain top of League One with a 2-0 win over Port Vale.

Brentford have remained top of the League One table by securing a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Port Vale at Griffin Park.

Despite the Bees' lofty status in England's third tier, it was the visitors who created the game's first opportunity, with Gavin Tomlin firing narrowly wide of the target in the early stages.

Tomlin saw his afternoon cut short after going off injured but his replacement, Jennison Myrie-Williams, nearly had an immediate impact; however, the 25-year-old could not direct header on goal from a Louis Dodds cross.

Micky Adams's men were soon made to pay the penalty for their earlier misses as Marcello Trotta fired the hosts into the lead, with the 21-year-old's 25-yard fizzing effort proving too good for Vale goalkeeper Chris Neal.

Mark Warburton's men put the result beyond doubt with two minutes of normal time remaining through Will Grigg to seal the points.

Brentford remain one point clear of second-placed Leyton Orient, who coasted to a 4-0 win over Carlisle United.
