Barcelona are dealt a blow in their pursuit of former midfielder Xavi to replace Ronald Koeman at Camp Nou as he signs a new two-year deal with his current club Al-Sadd.

Barcelona have been dealt a blow in their hopes to bring Xavi back to the club, as he has signed a new two-year deal with his current club Al-Sadd.

The former Barca midfielder started his senior managerial career with the Qatari club in 2019 and a new contract has tied the Spaniard down to Al-Sadd until 2023.

Xavi has enjoyed trophy success with his side this season after Al-Sadd won the Qatar Stars League and the Qatar Cup, which has added to his previous three titles with the club.

The Daily Mail reports that Xavi was a top target for Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who is looking to replace current manager Ronald Koeman for next season.

Speaking to Al-Sadd's website Xavi gave faith to his current club's fans and said: "I have a two-season contract with Al-Sadd, and I respect this contract, and I also respect the official negotiation methods between all parties.

"Our challenge is to continue to improve and develop, and I am very excited to help Al-Sadd players do that."

Koeman is now likely to continue as manager of the Spanish giants due to the lack of alternatives Laporta has found.
