Referee Miguel Ayza Gamez awards three penalty kicks and shows three red cards as Atletico Madrid beat Sevilla 2-1 in the first leg of the sides' Copa del Rey semi-final.

Three penalties were awarded and three red cards were shown as Atletico Madrid gained a narrow first-leg lead over Sevilla in the sides' Copa del Rey semi-final on Thursday night.

Atletico broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half after Emir Spahic had handled in the penalty area.

The Bosnian defender, who had earlier been booked for a foul on Arda Turan, was shown a second yellow card and Diego Costa rolled the resultant spot kick into the bottom-right corner.

Diego Godin was given his marching orders six minutes later for blocking Alvaro Negredo's goal-bound chip with his arm.

Negredo did the honours from 12 yards, but Sevilla's parity lasted just 15 minutes until referee Miguel Ayza Gamez pointed to the spot for a third time.

Fernando Navarro nudged the ball with his hand after falling over in the 18-yard box and Costa doubled his tally with minimum fuss.

Navarro was not sent off for the incident that led to the final spot kick, but he was eventually dismissed five minutes from time following a professional foul on Costa.

The second leg will take place at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on February 27.
