Player Ratings: Arsenal 2-0 Borussia Dortmund

Sports Mole looks at who caught the eye in Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Arsenal secured their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League this evening by seeing off Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

It took less than two minutes for the Gunners to get off the mark with Yaya Sanogo bagging his first goal for the club, before Alexis Sanchez doubled his side's advantage with a curling effort from long range shortly before the hour.

Dortmund, who still remain top of Group D despite this defeat, failed to create any real openings as they went in search of a route back into the game, with the hosts seeing out the contest fairly comfortably in the end.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at who impressed during the 90 minutes of action in North London.

ARSENAL

Goal

Emiliano Martinez: Dortmund only managed to get in four shots on goal across the 90 minutes, but each time he was called into action the third-choice keeper did well to deny the opposition. (8/10)

Defence

Calum Chambers: Looked a little groggy in the opening stages, but that did not stop him powering forward. Continues to show great energy despite the high number of games that he is being asked to play. (7/10)

Per Mertesacker: This was by no means the former Germany international's busiest evening, yet he remained solid at the back whenever the ball entered the box to help his side on their way to a much-needed clean sheet. (7/10)

Nacho Monreal: Far more assured at the Emirates Stadium tonight than he was during the 3-3 draw against Anderlecht a few weeks back. Laurent Koscielny's inclusion in the matchday squad may signal the end of the Spaniard's spell in the heart of defence. (7/10)

Kieran Gibbs: While at times he was caught out of position high up the pitch, Gibbs linked well with Alexis at times and proved to have an effective game down the left overall. (7/10)

Midfield

Mikel Arteta: He remained the deeper of the Gunners' two holding-midfielders, but his early yellow card for a rare rash challenge immediately sent alarm bells ringing. Limped off with 25 minutes remaining, which will be a concern for Arsene Wenger. (7/10)

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: It was clear to see right from the off that the England winger was high on confidence, and he came within the width of the crossbar of adding his name to the scoresheet with an audacious attempt. (8/10)

Aaron Ramsey: The Welsh midfielder is still not at the level that he reached last season, although he certainly has a big role to play in Arsenal's team. Was often the most advanced player, but opted to stay in deeper positions when holding onto a two-goal lead. (6/10)

Santi Cazorla: Got an assist inside the opening couple of minutes following his neat one-two with Sanogo, and was one of the home side's liveliest players all night. Showed incredible skill to race away from Immobile in the first half, which pretty much epitomised his evening. (8/10)

Alexis Sanchez: It is now 10 goals in 10 appearances for club and country for the £35m summer purchase from Barcelona, who is proving to be one of the finest players on the continent right now. Had no right to score the goal which wrapped up the game for the Premier League outfit, curling a fine effort beyond Weidenfeller (9/10)

Attack

Yaya Sanogo: Brought into the starting lineup to replace the injured Danny Welbeck, Sanogo justified his manager's decision to show faith in him from the off. He may have peaked with that early goal, but can still be happy with his general play. (8/10)

Substitutes

Lukas Podolski: The German is clearly much-loved by everyone at the Emirates Stadium other than Wenger. Still restricted to cameo appearances from the bench even with Arsenal's growing injury list. (6/10)

Mathieu Flamini: Brought on to replace the injured Arteta and add some needed bite to midfield. Flamini did exactly what was required of him to shut out the game. (7/10)

Joel Campbell: Was given just a few minutes to impress, which is not enough for a player looking to make a name for himself in North London. (5/10)

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Goal

Roman Weidenfeller: Will perhaps feel disappointed not to have kept out Sanogo's early goal, but could do nothing to deny Alexis's drive. (7/10)

Defence

Lukasz Piszczek: Was a real threat down the right-hand side in the first half, constantly looking to get in around the back of the opposition's backline and succeeding on a couple of occasions. (8/10)

Neven Subotic: Struggled to deal with Arsenal's attacking players in the early stages, before eventually settling down. Dortmund had conceded just one goal in the Champions League before tonight, but that tally has now been trebled. (6/10)

Matthias Ginter: Blocked Sanogo's shot from inside the box in the first half, but was caught out by the quick link-up play between the Frenchman and Sanchez early on. (6/10)

Marcel Schmelzer: Did not get forward as much as his teammate on the other flank, but still provided some width prior to Arsenal's second in which time Dortmund failed to create. (7/10)

Midfield

Henrikh Mkhitaryan: Squandered a brilliant opening on the half-hour mark, and although he tested Martinez a few times, he arguably should have converted one of the chances which fell his way. (6/10)

Sven Bender: Was a doubt coming into this one having missed Die Borussen's weekend draw against Padderborn. Kept the ball ticking over in midfield in a reserved role. (7/10)

Ilkay Gundogan: One of seven Dortmund starters who featured in the Champions League final a couple of years back, the in-demand midfielder did well enough this evening without causing any real damage. (7/10)

Kevin Grosskreutz: The closest he came to making a difference was 15 minutes from time when he produced a delightful ball across the opposition goal which was not capitalised on by a player in yellow and black. (6/10)

Attack

Ciro Immobile: Came within inches of levelling up the contest in the first half when sliding in at the back post, but that aside he was largely ineffective before being hauled off. (5/10)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Another of Dortmund's attacking players to be brought off having failed to make an impact in North London. Could not use his pace to his advantage. (5/10)

Substitutes

Shinki Kagawa: Klopp opted to make a double substitution on the hour, but the former Manchester United midfielder did not have the desired impact on the match. (6/10)

Milos Jojic: Given a 10-minute run out, although Dortmund could not grab a route back into the game. (6/10)

Adrian Ramos: Forced a solid save out of Martinez in the closing stages. Klopp had a few stern words with the striker at full time, which may have centred around that chance which he really should have converted. (5/10)
