Saido Berahino admits "mistake" over Twitter outburst

Saido Berahino thanks Tony Pulis for his help in winning West Bromwich Albion supporters back over following his social media gaffe at the beginning of the season.

West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino has further apologised for his actions last year when taking to Twitter to criticise chairman Jeremy Peace.

The England hopeful hit out at club chiefs after being denied a deadline-day move to Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.

Berahino has been made to pay the price for his outburst, having been restricted to a bit-part role for large parts of this season, but he has since got his head down in an attempt to improve relations.

Speaking to The Sun, the 22-year-old said: "I'm human and humans make mistakes. I'm not a robot. [Tony Pulis] has been brilliant. Sometimes I would make him a cup of tea and we would sit down and have long chats about the direction of my career. He would put his arm around me. I am in the limelight, with a public profile and I needed to gain a better understanding of what it means to be a professional footballer.

"It hurt being on the bench for so long. I was stuck in the middle a bit, I didn't like watching from the bench. It was a wake-up call. I should have handled it better with the chairman, I know that. I want to play the game at the highest level but, obviously, I went about it the wrong way. There was an opportunity to play for Tottenham and I wanted it to happen.

"I needed to look at my life. I had to get my act together. It affected my family, especially my mum and I feel really bad about that. What I did was not on. I had to make a fresh start - it was one of those days when I woke up and I just wanted to put things behind me. After the transfer window closed last month I realised I was going to stay at West Brom, so I programmed myself to get fit."

Recent reports suggest that Tottenham could be prepared to make a fresh approach for Berahino when the transfer window reopens.
