Southampton's struggles continue at home to Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur move up into the Premier League's top four with a 2-0 win at struggling Southampton.

First-half goals from Harry Kane and Dele Alli gave Tottenham Hotspur victory at St Mary's this afternoon and condemned Southampton to their fourth defeat in five winless Premier League games.

After an even opening 40 minutes, Spurs struck as Kane marked his 100th appearance for the North London side.

The England striker collected the ball just inside the Saints' half and danced his way through on goal before finishing with aplomb for his 10th goal in 10 games.

Three minutes later St Mary's was silenced once more as statuesque defending from the home side allowed Alli to stroll in and stroke home at the back post.

In the second half Southampton struggled to produce much to worry Tottenham, with Hugo Lloris denying James Ward-Prowse a late consolation with a sharp save.

Victory moves Spurs up into the top four with Manchester United surprisingly losing at home to Norwich City, but they remain nine points adrift of Christmas leaders Leicester City, who won at Everton today.

With sides below them starting to find form, Southampton are very much looking over their shoulder and could be within four points of the relegation zone if Swansea City beat West Ham United tomorrow.
