Mauricio Pochettino: 'Danny Rose was close to leaving Tottenham Hotspur'

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino reveals that Danny Rose was close to leaving the club in the summer of 2014.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Danny Rose was close to leaving the club shortly after the Argentine arrived as manager in the summer of 2014.

Rose, who joined Spurs from Leeds United in 2007, was struggling for game time and contemplated his future following loan spells at Watford, Peterborough United, Bristol City and Sunderland.

However, Rose stayed put and signed a new five-year contract one month after Pochettino was appointed at White Hart Lane.

"It was 21 months ago when we arrived and the first meeting I had with a Tottenham player was with Danny," the London Evening Standard quotes Pochettino as saying. "All the others were on holiday, so I called him and he came to my office.

"Whenever a new manager arrives at a new club, always the players need to know the ideas. My idea from the beginning was to give him a chance to show he has enough quality to play for Tottenham."

Rose scored the winner in last weekend's 2-1 victory over Swansea City.
