Guglielmo Vicario bites back at Callum Wilson over "lack of respect" jibe

Guglielmo Vicario fires back at Callum Wilson after being accused of a "lack of respect" by the Newcastle United striker in their 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has hit back at Callum Wilson after being accused of a "lack of respect" by the Newcastle United forward in their 4-1 Premier League win over the Magpies on Sunday evening.

Ange Postecoglou's side ended a five-game winless run in the top flight by seeing off Eddie Howe's injury-hit squad, who went into half time 2-0 down courtesy of Destiny Udogie and Richarlison's efforts.

The latter then added a second to his tally following the restart, before Son Heung-min registered his 10th goal of the season from the penalty spot, rendering Joelinton's injury-time strike inconsequential.

However, Wilson and Vicario were involved in a fracas at the full-time whistle, which stemmed from the latter sticking his tongue out at the Newcastle striker after catching a late header from the Englishman.

Wilson took offence to the Italian's gesture and made his feelings known at the end of the game, forcing other players to step in and separate the pair, and Wilson was questioned on the incident by Sky Sports News at full time.

Referencing a similar incident involving Everton's Jordan Pickford in Newcastle's 3-0 midweek loss to the Toffees, Wilson said: "There's a way to win, isn't there. I think we've seen it in the week, where Everton were winning and Pickford was messing around.

"The goalkeeper [Vicario], for the header, he starts pulling faces and messing around and it's just a lack of respect I thought, but I've said my piece. We're grown men and we move on."

Wilson's comments sparked a response from Vicario on Instagram, who in turn appeared to suggest that the England international had also failed to show respect to him during the contest.

Sharing an image of their on-field exchange, as well as a Sky Sports headline from Wilson's interview, Vicario stated: "Respect is given... to everyone that respects me!".

Tottenham's emphatic triumph over Newcastle at the weekend saw Postecoglou's team re-establish their three-point lead over Manchester United in fifth place, although they still have a seven-point gap to make up to new leaders Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Newcastle's second successive defeat in the division leaves Howe's charges down in seventh position with 26 points to their name, only ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion on goal difference.

The Magpies now have a pivotal Champions League clash at home to AC Milan on the agenda for Wednesday evening, where they must win and hope that Paris Saint-Germain fail to overcome Borussia Dortmund to qualify for the last 16.

Newcastle will then return to Premier League duty at home to Fulham on Saturday, while Tottenham's next top-flight fixture comes away to Nottingham Forest on Friday evening.
