Son Heung-min's record vs. Manchester City

Ahead of Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League clash with Manchester City, Sports Mole takes a closer look at Son Heung-min's record against the champions.

Tottenham Hotspur will somehow attempt to halt Manchester City's Premier League title charge when they travel to face the Citizens on Saturday evening.

Antonio Conte's side have seen their top-four aspirations dealt killer blows in recent weeks, suffering three defeats on the bounce to Chelsea, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, the Lilywhites did claim a memorable 1-0 win over the reigning champions under Nuno Espirito Santo's tutelage at the start of the season, with Son's winner adding to a long line of contributions in this fixture.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at Son's record against Man City as Spurs endeavour to reignite their charge for Champions League football.

Son's debut season at Spurs saw the North London club enjoy a rare double over Man City in the 2015-16 campaign - winning 4-1 at home before a 2-1 success at the Etihad - the South Korean started both encounters but could not bag a goal or assist in either game.

Spurs managed to make it three wins on the bounce against Man City in October 2016 as Son assisted Dele Alli's strike in a 2-0 White Hart Lane victory, and the ex-Bayer Leverkusen man struck his first goal against Pep Guardiola's side three months later to complete the comeback in a 2-2 Etihad draw.

However, Son then failed to grab a goal or assist in three consecutive Premier League losses to Man City, but he put in two fantastic shifts against them in the 2018-19 Champions League, even if his efforts ultimately went unrewarded in the final.

Indeed, Son scored the only goal as Spurs won 1-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final tie before bagging a pivotal three-minute brace in that 4-3 spectacular at the Etihad, with the Lilywhites going through on away goals.

After missing the 2-2 draw in August 2019 through suspension, Son scored his side's second in a 2-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before lightning struck twice in November 2020 - with that victory seeing Jose Mourinho's side go top.

The 29-year-old could not prevent Spurs going down 1-0 to Man City in the 2021 EFL Cup final but scored the only goal of the game in the opening gameweek of the season, with the capital club enjoying several eye-catching results against City in recent times.

Son boasts a respectable record of seven wins from his 14 encounters with Man City in all competitions, during which time he has amassed seven goals and one assist, with five of those contributions coming in his 11 Premier League matches.

A tally of nine strikes in the 2021-22 top-flight season comfortably makes him Spurs' top Premier League scorer this term, and more of the same will be required from Son if the Lilywhites can return to winning ways in the biggest test of them all.
