Clarke Carlisle in stable condition

The family of Clarke Carlisle reveal that he is in a "stable and relatively comfortable" condition following his serious car accident last month.

The family of former PFA chairman Clarke Carlisle have revealed that he is in a "stable and relatively comfortable" condition.

The 35-year-old was involved in a serious car accident on December 22, colliding with a lorry on the A64 near York.

The former Burnley and Queens Park Rangers defender is receiving treatment in a hospital in Leeds, but his family have warned that he faces a "long road to full recovery".

"Our family and especially Clarke, would like to thank each and every person for their unbelievable support at this very difficult time," read the statement.

"The fantastic and expert attention of all of the staff at Leeds General infirmary has brought him from a critical condition to a stable and relatively comfortable one.

"However, this will be a long road to full recovery and the family would request that you respect our privacy at this time."

Earlier this week it emerged that Carlisle had been charged with a drink-driving offence just days before the accident.
