Darren Fletcher says that he intends to repay the soon-to-be retired Sir Alex Ferguson by returning to Manchester United's first team following his illness.

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has insisted that he wants to express his gratitude towards Sir Alex Ferguson by returning to the first team.

The 29-year-old, who has had a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a chronic bowel condition, has admitted that he has had constant support from the Scotsman, who will retire after 26 years at Old Trafford when the season comes to a close.

"Through illness and injury Sir Alex has been more than just a manager to me," Fletcher told The Express. "The human side of his character in the last couple of years has really been appreciated by myself and my family. Of course he's driven by football, but he's always been there for me when I needed guidance and advice.

"I couldn't have asked for anyone better to be helping me through my illness and I will always be enormously grateful for all the help and care he's shown. I'm desperate to pay him back.

"Hopefully, as things progress and I get back playing again for United that will allow me to show my gratitude for everything he has done and the support he has given."

Fletcher has been under the leadership of Ferguson since he began training with the club at 12 years old.
