United started the better of the two sides and passed the ball sharply as they looked for an opening.

Van Persie almost gave the home side the lead on 10 minutes when Wayne Rooney played the Dutchman through on goal who after taking it round Tim Howard hit the post.

Three minutes later, Giggs gave Sir Alex Ferguson's side the lead, slotting into the bottom corner after being set up by Van Persie.

Everton gradually got themselves back into the game and began to create opportunities.

Kevin Mirallas was presented with a chance on the half-hour mark, but he was closed down well by Jonny Evans.

David Moyes's side tested David de Gea with a series of lofted balls into the box, but the young Spaniard stood firm.

Leon Osman wasted a good chance on the edge of the area on 41 minutes, sending his shot wide of the post by some distance.

Van Persie made it 2-0 just before half time when Rafael played him in on goal, and the striker took the ball past Howard before finishing well.
