Mainz, Hoffenheim fluff lines in stalemate

Mainz 05 and Hoffenheim spurn the chance to move above Bayern Munich into top spot in the Bundesliga after playing out a 0-0 draw.

Mainz 05 and Hoffenheim have both spurned the chance to move top of the Bundesliga table tonight following a goalless draw at the Coface Arena.

Victory for either side would have seen them replace Bayern Munich at the summit for now at least but, in a game of few chances, both outfits failed to get off the mark.

It took over half-an-hour for either side to fashion a clear goalscoring chance, and it was Mainz as Filip Djuricic forced Oliver Baumann into a smart save on 36 minutes.

Baumann replicated those heroics to keep the hosts out once more early in the second half, this time denying Jonas Hofmann from opening the scoring.

Hoffenheim slowly grew into the clash and forged their first real chance on the hour mark as Roberto Firmino nodded a close-range header against the post.

It proved to be the last real opportunity of the clash as the duo shared the spoils.
