Steven Gerrard: 'Luis Suarez let me take free kick against Sunderland'

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard reveals that Luis Suarez gave him the go-ahead to take the free kick which resulted in their opening goal against Sunderland.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has revealed that he was given permission by teammate Luis Suarez to take a goal-bound free kick against Sunderland on Wednesday night.

The England international opened the scoring against the Black Cats at Anfield from a set piece, despite Suarez usually being at the top of the list.

"I don't usually get a go at them," Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo. "Suarez has been magnificent on set pieces but sometimes you need people to step in and I got that one.

"Suarez let me take one! He wouldn't let me take one at Cardiff, but it doesn't matter who gets the goals."

Despite a nerve-wracking final 10 minutes at Anfield, the Reds have kept up their Premier League title charge by holding on to a 2-1 victory.
