Jamie Carragher backs Rickie Lambert to impress at West Bromwich Albion

Jamie Carragher believes that Rickie Lambert will play a key role for West Brom this season following his move from Liverpool.

Jamie Carragher has backed Rickie Lambert to be a success at West Bromwich Albion following the striker's move from Liverpool.

The 33-year-old joined the Baggies on Friday after spending just one season at his boyhood club.

Lambert scored twice on his West Brom debut in a 4-0 friendly win over Bristol Rovers, and Carragher expects the England international to play a key role for the side this season.

"When I watched him for LFC he was trying too hard as he was desperate to do well for his boyhood club," the former defender wrote on KICCA.

"I felt he should have been given a few more opportunities but, when Raheem Sterling started playing as a striker at Old Trafford before Christmas, it was only a matter of time before Lambert moved on.

"I think he'll do very well for Tony Pulis and we'll see more of the Rickie Lambert we saw at Southampton."

West Brom start the new Premier League campaign at home to Manchester City on August 10.
