The Brazilian shot-stopper has missed the Reds' last two Premier League games with the problem, during which time his replacement Adrian has conceded nine goals.

Alisson was expected to miss up to six weeks, but The Athletic reports that he is now on course to return earlier than first feared.

Indeed, the keeper could be back before the end of the month, with a return to training imminent unless he suffers a setback in his recovery.

The news will be a welcome boost for Liverpool after they were rocked by the news that Virgil van Dijk needs potentially season-ending surgery to an ACL injury he sustained during Saturday's Merseyside derby draw at Everton.

Jurgen Klopp is also sweating over the fitness of Thiago Alcantara, who completed the game but picked up an injury after being on the end of a red-card challenge from Richarlison.

Liverpool's next match comes against Ajax as they get their Champions League campaign underway on Wednesday night.
