Gillingham snatched a dramatic 3-2 victory over Leyton Orient this afternoon with the last kick of the game to hand them their first victory since September and move them out of the relegation zone.
Chris Dagnall thought that he had done enough to secure a point for the O's in the 95th minute, but Cody McDonald forced home a winner two minutes later to send the home fans into raptures.
Gillingham began brightly and Gavin Hoyte surged forward in the opening four minutes before laying on a precise cross for Brennan Dickenson, but the forward headed wide of goal.
The Gills were then offered a great chance to open the scoring from the spot when Scott Cuthbert felled Dickenson, but Adam Legzdins kept out Danny Kedwell's weak penalty.
The missed spot kick didn't seem to affect the hosts though, who went close once more through Doughty's 14th-minute half-volley from 20 yards that flew narrowly over the bar.
Leyton Orient did go close in the 34th minute, but Stuart Nelson was equal to Dean Cox's low drive.
Three minutes after the restart, Gianvito Plasmati showed Kedwell how to convert from the spot with a coolly taken penalty to net his first goal for the O's.
Leyton Orient's lead lasted less than 10 minutes though, as Leon Legge nodded into the back of the net from a high ball into the box to make it 1-1.
Kedwell then followed up his first-half spot-kick miss with another poor effort from just six yards out.
His blushes were spared by Legge once more though, as the defender thumped a header into the back of the net from an inswinging free kick in the 74th minute to hand the home side the lead for the first time in the game.
Doughty was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence 14 minutes from time and when Dagnall nodded home in the fifth minute of injury time, it looked as though Gillingham had surrendered their winning position.
However, McDaonld volleyed home from close range in the 97th minute to lift the Gills out of the relegation zone.
