There were wins for Germany, England, Uruguay and USA as Spain prevent a surprise defeat in Costa Rica with two late goals from David Silva and David Villa.

Away from the Euro 2012 playoffs some of the world's top teams faced up in international friendlies this evening.

In Hamburg, goals from Thomas Muller, Miroslav Klose and Mesut Ozil gave Germany victory over great rivals Holland while Italy lost only their second game in over a year going down to Uruguay.

Malaga forward Sebastian Fernandez scored the only goal in Rome with a third-minute effort.

England's 2,000th goal was scored by Sweden centre-back Daniel Majstorovic as the hosts ended 2011 unbeaten with a 1-0 win at Wembley.

World champions Spain staged a late comeback to prevent a surprise loss to Costa Rica in San Jose.

One of Arsenal's latest signings, teenager Joel Campbell, scored the second as the hosts took a two-goal half-time lead.

Costa Rica looked set to complete the upset until the 83rd minute when David Silva pulled a goal back for the Spanish before David Villa equalised in the 93rd minute.

Fulham's Clint Dempsey scored for the United States in their 3-2 victory in Slovenia while France were held to a goalless draw by Belgium at the Stade de France.
