Late Fernando Torres goal downs Manchester City

Fernando Torres capitalises on a mix-up between Matija Nastasic and Joe Hart in the 90th minute to win this afternoon's Premier League match for Chelsea against Manchester City.

Gary Cahill fired an early volley over the crossbar after beating the offside trap as the Blues began on the front foot.

Torres had a similar chance just before the half-hour mark when Ramires picked him out. The Spaniard took a touch and just had to beat Joe Hart but somehow swiped over.

The number nine atoned for the miss moments later by beating Gael Clichy for pace down the right and fizzing over a cross that Andre Schurrle tapped home for his first goal in Chelsea blue.

Torres was the centre of attention in the first half and almost doubled the hosts' lead with a shot out-of-nothing from a tight angle that flew past Hart before cannoning back off the underside of the crossbar.

Sergio Aguero had City's best chance of the first half as he worked a yard of space in the area before lashing at goal from an angle, with Petr Cech beating it out.

The visitors were level three minutes after the interval when Samir Nasri fed Aguero, who was running away from goal but still found the roof of the net with a left-foot strike that whizzed past Cech.

City then could have taken the lead but Javi Garcia's header from a David Silva free kick was straight at Cech.

Five minutes later it was a Chelsea header that almost brought a goal as Torres met Frank Lampard's delivery but could only find the gloves of Hart.

It looked like both sides would have to settle for a draw until some 90th-minute madness.

A hopeful punt upfield was bouncing between Nastasic and Hart and although the England keeper appeared to be about to clear, Nastasic headed past his teammate, allowing Torres to run around them both and finish just before the ball went out of play.

Three points lifts Chelsea up to second, two behind leaders Arsenal, while City drop a place to seventh.
