Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois: 'Players are manufacturing contact'

Courtois: 'Players are manufacturing contact'

Chelsea stopper Thibaut Courtois claims that players are increasingly looking to 'manufacture' contact with goalkeepers in order to win a penalty.

Thibaut Courtois has claimed that goalkeepers are not receiving enough protection from referees when it comes to penalties.

Courtois conceded a spot kick after making contact with Gerard Deulofeu during Chelsea's 4-1 defeat at Watford, and the Belgian has maintained that he does not think a penalty should have been awarded.

A day earlier, Liverpool stopper Loris Karius was adjudged to have fouled Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in similar circumstances - when the player was looking to take the ball around the goalkeeper - and Courtois has suggested that contact was 'manufactured' in both situations.

The 25-year-old told Sky Sports News: "I think we all know these kind of players. It happens everywhere in the world, this type of striker sees the goalkeeper coming for the ball. I make myself as small as possible with my belly on the ground and he manufactures the contact. I'm sorry but I don't think it's a penalty.

"[On Sunday in Liverpool and Tottenham's 2-2 draw] we saw when the goalkeeper comes out and is late you make yourself small but the striker puts his foot there and it's a penalty, every time this will happen. He left his foot and dives, it's not a penalty."

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher said that the referee was right to award a foul on Kane.
