Elliott Bennett: 'First goal vital in Huddersfield Town clash'

Elliott Bennett admits that Bristol City have been "punished" for a recent failure to score first in games, which he believes could be the difference this weekend.

Bristol City loanee Elliott Bennett has talked up the importance of scoring the first goal in this weekend's crucial showdown against Huddersfield Town.

The Robins head to the John Smith's Stadium without a victory in any of their last four, including successive defeats to Rotherham United and Blackburn Rovers.

Bennett insists that City have done enough to warrant more points from their recent outings, but believes that a failure to open the scoring has cost his side dearly.

"We know the first goal is important in most football matches and it's more evident in the Championship," he told the club's official website.

"Most of the time when a team goes ahead they tend to win or at least draw the game. I think that's been the difference in the last couple of games as we've played well, not got our noses in front and be punished for it.

"If we can score the first goal and play the way we have been playing, get a little bit of luck in scoring the first goal then I'm sure we can go on and get the three points."

City are outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone, sitting two points below weekend opponents Huddersfield who occupy 19th place.
