Burn gives Hughton food for thought with fine Brighton debut

The centre-back signed from Wigan last summer.

Brighton debutant Dan Burn believes he has given manager Chris Hughton something to think about as he attempts to break the established centre-back partnership of Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy.

Burn, signed from Wigan in the summer but loaned back to the Sky Bet Championship club for the first half of the season, finally pulled on a Seagulls shirt in Saturday's FA Cup fourth-round stalemate with West Brom.

The 26-year-old contributed to a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw at the Amex Stadium and was named the sponsor's man of the match.

With England international Dunk and Republic of Ireland regular Duffy ahead of him in the pecking order, Burn accepts his first-team chances may be limited.

"Obviously I'm not going to get many opportunities here as we've got good international centre-halves, and it's up to me to take my chance when it comes," he told Brighton's website.

"Thankfully I did that. We probably could've done without the replay but, on a personal note, it means I can possibly get another game.

"I'm glad we kept a clean sheet and we're still in the cup."

Burn is likely to be dropped from Hughton's starting XI for Tuesday's Premier League game at his former club Fulham.

He was on the books at Craven Cottage for five years between 2011 and 2016 before moving to Wigan and is looking forward to being reunited with some familiar faces.

"I had a great time at Fulham and towards the end, it went a bit downhill, but when I first went there, it was a very good club," he said

"I've still got a few friends there and it will be good to see them on Tuesday if I'm involved.

"It's a lovely place to play, with the cottage down by the river. I'm sure it will be a great football match with two strong teams and I'm hoping we take the win."

West Brom boss Darren Moore, who had seven academy graduates in his squad in Sussex, brushed off rumours about re-signing former loanee Harvey Barnes to help the club's Championship promotion push.

England Under-21 forward Barnes scored nine times in 26 league appearances for the Baggies before being recalled by his parent club earlier this month.

"We're speculating here now," said Moore.

"Harvey's had a wonderful time with us, he's back with Leicester, we just focus on (the) performance."
