Borussia Dortmund vs. Arsenal: Previous meetings

Ahead of Borussia Dortmund vs. Arsenal tonight, Sports Mole looks back on the five previous matches between the two clubs.

Arsenal travel to Borussia Dortmund tonight with both sides locked on six points in their Champions League group.

The two teams have met on five previous occasions and here Sports Mole has looked back on each of those clashes.

1. Arsenal 2-0 Dortmund, September 2002

The first meeting between these two occurred 11 years ago when they were drawn in the same group alongside PSV Eindhoven and Auxerre. It took until the 62nd minute, but the hosting Gunners broke the deadlock when Dennis Bergkamp's shot from the edge of the area deflected into the net via Christoph Metzelder. The outcome was then sealed by Fredrik Ljungberg 13 minutes from time when the Swede finished off a counter-attack.

2. Dortmund 2-1 Arsenal, October 2002

The return fixture didn't go to plan for Arsene Wenger's side, despite them taking the lead as Thierry Henry curled in an early free kick. The Germans were level before the break as now Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky's cross from distance eluded David Seaman. He then claimed what would prove to be the winning goal from the penalty spot after the restart. The result meant that both sides qualified for the second group stage.

3. Dortmund 1-1 Arsenal, September 2011

It appeared that Arsenal were going to get their 2011-12 Champions League campaign off to a winning start when Robin van Persie's goal from a Theo Walcott through-pass put them 1-0 in front. However, with two minutes left to play, Dortmund's Croatian midfielder Ivan Perisic sent a dipping volley from the edge of the penalty area into the top corner of the net. Only a smart stop from Wojciech Szczesny to deny Robert Lewandowski in stoppage time prevented the hosts from taking all three points.

4. Arsenal 2-1 Dortmund, November 2011

Van Persie followed up his goal in Dortmund with a brace back at the Emirates Stadium. He first headed in a cross from Alex Song shortly after the restart, before turning in a corner that had been sent into the box by Mikel Arteta with four minutes left to play. Shinji Kagawa, now of Manchester United, pulled one back for the visitors in injury time, but it only proved to be a mere consolation.

5. Arsenal 1-2 Dortmund, October 2013

A disappointing night for Arsenal in North London last month as Dortmund brought themselves back into contention in the group. A mistake from Aaron Ramsey allowed summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan to put the Germans in front, but Olivier Giroud drew Arsenal level shortly before the break. It seemed as though a draw was on the cards, but an unmarked Lewandowski struck in the 82nd minute to seal all three points for Jurgen Klopp's charges.
