Arsenal 'plan to back Mikel Arteta with January funds to avoid relegation'

The Arsenal hierarchy are reportedly prepared to back Mikel Arteta with funds in the January transfer window amid relegation fears.

The Gunners have endured a torrid start to the 2020-21 campaign - their worst for 46 years - and Arteta's men are only four points clear of the drop zone after 14 games.

Arsenal sit 15th in the table, but 18th-placed Burnley do have two games in hand, and the pressure on Arteta's shoulders is beginning to mount with the Gunners winless in the league since November 1.

According to the Daily Mail, Arteta will be provided with funds to strengthen the squad in the transfer market, with a creative midfielder understood to be a priority.

However, the report also adds that while most of the Gunners squad are behind Arteta, a number of players in the dressing room are growing increasingly frustrated, which is leading to tension behind the scenes.

Emiliano Buendia, Christian Eriksen and Houssem Aouar have all been tipped to solve Arsenal's creativity problems, but Dominik Szoboszlai - who was strongly linked with a January move to the Emirates - has now joined RB Leipzig.

Zinedine Zidane confident over Sergio Ramos deal

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is confident that Sergio Ramos will soon pen a new contract at the Bernabeu.

The 34-year-old remains an inspirational figure for the Spanish champions but has still not signed an extension and as it stands will be a free agent at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

In theory, foreign clubs could begin talks with Ramos in January over a switch next summer, but Zidane has said that he expects the centre-back to stay at the club "for many years".

"When a player wants to stay that means a lot. With Sergio Ramos, I see him staying for many years. He's looking after himself well and I'm not surprised about what he's achieving," Zidane told reporters.

Ramos has scored three times in 13 appearances for Madrid this season, while he has made 663 appearances for the Spanish champions in total, contributing 100 goals in the process.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Liverpool are all allegedly interested in signing the defender on a free transfer.
