Jo-Wilfried Tsonga comes through Jurgen Melzer test

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beats Jurgen Melzer in three sets to earn his place in the last 16 of the Paris Masters.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has progressed into the third round of the Paris Masters with a three-set victory over Jurgen Melzer.

The 10th seed appeared to have lost his momentum during the second set before eventually prevailing 6-2 4-6 6-2 in front of his home crowd.

Tsonga looked on course for an easy night's work after breaking Melzer three times on the way to taking the opening set, but the 33-year-old, who has dropped down to number 122 in the world rankings, had other ideas.

The left-hander took advantage of Tsonga's struggles on his second serve to break twice in succession to force a deciding set.

However, Tsonga regain his previous form at the start of the third to break Melzer for a fifth time in the match, and that was enough for the 29-year-old to advance through to the last 16 where he will play Kei Nishikori.
