James Rodwell: 'We made too many mistakes'

England forward James Rodwell admits that his side made too many mistakes in their medal quarter-final defeat to Australia at the Commonwealth Games today.

England forward James Rodwell has admitted that his side made too many mistakes in their Commonwealth Games defeat to Samoa this afternoon.

Simon Amor's side saw their hopes of a medal ended at the quarter-final stage as Samoa pipped them to a dramatic 15-14 victory at Ibrox.

Rodwell, who was sent to the sin bin during the defeat, admitted that the team was "gutted" after the match, but acknowledged that they didn't do enough to win.

"The boys are absolutely gutted at the moment. We didn't control the game as we wanted and we made too many errors," he told reporters.

England almost fought their way into the lead following a moment of individual brilliance from winger Dan Norton, who latched on to his own kick to bring his side within a point of the Pacific Islanders.

"Norts is a special player. He's always got something like that in his locker, so it's good to see him do it on such a big stage," he added.

England will now face hosts Scotland in the semi-finals of the plate.
