Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori shelves his plans to retire later this year and will instead continue racing in the United States next year.

Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori has performed a U-turn on his plans to retire later this year.

The 52-year-old had previously said that 2023 would be his final year of racing, but he has now decided to continue his career in the United States.

Dettori will move to California and revealed that his success this year was a driving force behind changing his mind and deciding to race on.

"I've still got the fire inside me that I want to do it a little bit more," he told BBC Sport.

"I don't feel ready to let go yet. I'm going to spend some time in the USA and take it from there. I could be there three months or three years, I don't know.

"It was a long, hard decision with myself and my wife. It's a big decision to move to another country."

What was thought to be Dettori's farewell tour this year has included victories in the 2,000 Guineas, the Oaks and Ebor.

The move to USA will bring an end to 37 years of riding in Britain, with the Italian still planning for British Champions Day at Ascot on October 21 to host his final race on English soil.

Dettori is also planning rides in Melbourne and Hong Kong after that this year, while his new venture will likely see him take part in the Kentucky Derby in May.

Dettori has ridden more than 3,300 winners during his illustrious career, including his famous Magnificent Seven at Ascot in 1996, when he rode all the winners on the card at odds of 25,000-1.
