South African prosecutors 'to appeal Oscar Pistorius's verdict and sentence'

South African prosecutors will reportedly appeal against Oscar Pistorius's verdict and five-year prison sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

South African prosecutors have reportedly revealed that they intend to appeal against Oscar Pistorius's verdict and five-year prison sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The six-time Paralympic champion was sentenced at the High Court in Pretoria, South Africa last Tuesday after he was found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter).

The state pushed for premeditated murder, but judge Thokozile Masipa believed Pistorius when he claimed that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four gunshots through a toilet door at his home in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year.

According to the Associated Press, prosecutors will appeal both the verdict and the sentence after it was reported that Pistorius could spend 10 months behind bars and the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

Meanwhile, Steenkamp's mother June has recently claimed that Pistorius "would have killed sooner or later".
