Report: David Beckham picks Miami for MLS franchise

Former England captain David Beckham reportedly decides on Miami, Florida, as the venue for the MLS franchise that he plans to set up.

David Beckham has apparently chosen Miami as the city in which he plans to set up his own Major League Soccer franchise.

The former England captain, who retired from playing at the end of last season, had an option in his contract when he signed for Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007 to buy an MLS franchise for a discounted £15m.

The state of Florida has not had a top-flight soccer team since 2001, and while a deal is yet to be complete, Sky Sports News reports that Beckham has named Miami as his final preference.

However, the same source claims that he will face competition from as many as 12 other potential investors who have also declared their interest in forming an expansion team.

The reported £15m sum is around a quarter of the price that Manchester City paid to launch New York City FC, in partnership with the New York Yankees, from 2015.
