Former Chicago Bears quarterback Erik Kramer survives after reportedly trying to take his own life by shooting himself in a Los Angeles motel.

Former Chicago Bears quarterback Erik Kramer has survived after reportedly shooting himself in an attempted suicide on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The 50-year-old is believed to have been found injured by police in a motel in Calabasas at around 8pm local time.

Following the incident, Kramer's ex-wife Marshawn revealed that the retired sportsman has been suffering with depression for a number of years.

"He is a very amazing man, a beautiful soul, but he has suffered depression since he was with the Bears," Marshawn told NBC News. "I can promise you he is not the same man I married."

Kramer, who spent 13 seasons playing in the NFL, divorced his wife in 2010 and a year later suffered the loss of his 18-year-old son Griffen, who died of a drug overdose.
