Ilham Zakiyev wins blind 90kg judo gold

Azerbaijani war hero Ilham Zakiyev wins gold in the men's visually impaired +90kg judo event in Baku.

Local favourite Ilham Zakiyev of Azerbaijan has beaten Oleksandr Pominov of Ukraine to win gold in the men's visually impaired +90kg judo event at the European Games.

The 35-year-old beat Pominov with a score of 100s2 to become European champion in front of his home fans at the Heydar Aliyev Arena this evening.

In 1999, former soldier Zakiyev - then aged 18 - was left completely blind when he was shot in the head by an Armenian sniper, with the bullet entering his temple and exiting the opposite side.

Russian Federation's Aleksandr Parasiuk and Zakiyev's compatriot Zakir Mislimov both shared the bronze after losing their respective semi-finals.
