Kenny Jackett heaps praise on versatile David Edwards

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Kenny Jackett expects experienced midfielder David Edwards to play a big part in his side's hunt for Championship promotion this season.

Kenny Jackett has backed midfielder David Edwards to play a key role for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season.

The Wales international scored the winning goal in his side's 2-1 opening-day victory over Blackburn Rovers last weekend.

Edwards, who is the oldest player in the Wolves squad at the age of 29, also set up Benik Afobe's opener prior to his own controversial strike on the stroke of half time at Ewood Park.

"His movement, his ability to either split the strikers or get behind the front two or interchange with them is very, very good," Jackett is quoted as saying by the Express & Star. "He'll always do a job defensively and out of possession is very accountable and quite often the first one to get and press people.

"He does bring a lot to it. Quite often he's not orthodox for the opposition to pick up and can become quite a key player for us. I don't think Dave is playing left midfield, it's more of a diamond formation with him doing a job defensively but he can close down right across the front line.

"In possession he has the freedom to move right across and perhaps more freedom from there than he gets in central midfield. I do think, going from that position, he can cause problems."

Edwards joined Wolves from Luton seven years ago in a deal worth £675,000.
