Wigan boss Roberto Martinez slams Norwich midfielder Bradley Johnson for a "nasty" tackle on James McCarthy.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has criticised Norwich City midfielder Bradley Johnson's tackle on James McCarthy in this afternoon's match between the two sides.

McCarthy was forced off at half time of Wigan's 2-1 defeat with an ankle injury caused by Johnson's tackle.

The Canaries midfielder was given a yellow card for the challenge, but Martinez hinted that he thought the punishment should have been more severe.

"It was a nasty challenge, one incident off the ball. The referee has seen it and has given Johnson a yellow card," said the Spanish manager.

"It is one of those actions you don't want to see. James McCarthy has been in good form, and they took him out of the game, which is very disappointing.

"It is his ankle ligaments, we will X-ray it and get the results from the scans very shortly, but I doubt if he will be available for the next 10 days."

The injury could rule McCarthy out of Wigan's match against Arsenal next weekend, and could also endanger his inclusion in their Boxing Day trip to Everton.
