Pepe Mel taking inspiration from Sunderland result

Pepe Mel insists that West Bromwich Albion will take encouragement from Sunderland's 1-1 draw against Manchester City when they travel to the Etihad Stadium on Monday.

West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel has insisted that his side will take encouragement from Sunderland's shock draw against Manchester City when they travel to the Etihad Stadium.

The Black Cats left Manchester with a point following a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night, moving one point closer to safety.

West Brom travel to Man City on Monday night in the thick of the relegation battle themselves.

"There are two readings of that result," Mel is quoted as saying by the Belfast Telegraph. "One would be simply that Sunderland ended up gaining a point. But the better interpretation from our point of view is that is that it means it is actually possible for us to go there on Monday and get a result.

"The only thing we are talking about is winning. We really haven't considered anything else - we are preparing the team to go there and win. The thing is, in football, anyone can beat anyone else, so we are going there looking for the victory."

The Baggies are currently three points clear of the relegation zone.
