Jermain Defoe: 'Wear-Tyne derby winner one of my best goals'

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe describes his goal in Easter Sunday's 1-0 derby win against Newcastle United as 'one of the best' goals that he has ever scored.

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has called his winning goal in Easter Sunday's derby against Newcastle United 'one of the best' goals that he has ever scored.

The veteran England man latched on to Steven Fletcher's headed flick-on on the stroke of half time to smash a volley into the roof of the Magpies net and ultimately give the Black Cats a 1-0 win.

Defoe told BBC Sport after the game: "It's one of my best. With my left foot as well. Even a tap-in would be massive in a game like this.

"As the ball was dropping I was just concentrating on the strike, during the week I've done a lot of shooting and as soon as it left my foot I knew it was in.

"It was an unbelievable feeling when it went in. We've beaten them for a fifth time in a row and what a feeling. Hopefully the fans can be happy and we can kick on."

Sunderland climb to 15th in the Premier League table, three points above the drop zone and six points behind 13th-placed Newcastle.
