Peter Schmeichel denies Sheffield United application

Peter Schmeichel says that while it is "great" to have been linked with the managerial role at Sheffield United, he has not applied for the job.

Peter Schmeichel has rejected speculation that he has lodged an application to become the new manager of League One side Sheffield United.

A report last night claimed that the former Manchester United goalkeeper was eager to take charge of the Blades, who have been without a boss since David Weir was sacked late last week.

"I can see that I've been linked with the vacant managers job at Sheffield United - this is not my doing. I have not applied for any jobs, but it's great to be associated with such a great football club," the 49-year-old tweeted.

Former Derby County manager Nigel Clough is the current favourite with the majority of the bookmakers to be given the job.
