Ramon Calderon hits out at Real Madrid's decision to sell Cristiano Ronaldo

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon criticises the club's current chief Florentino Perez for selling Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus.

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has criticised the club's current chief Florentino Perez for selling Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus.

Ronaldo moved from Madrid to Turin in the summer of 2018 after winning his fifth Ballon d'Or and a personal fifth Champions League title and has continued to be successful in Italy, scoring 74 goals and recording a further 19 assists in just 96 games.

However, Los Blancos have not enjoyed the same level of success in Europe since Ronaldo's departure, and Calderon believes letting the Portuguese star leave was a poor decision.

"It was a big mistake by [Florentino Perez] to sell him for €110m (£99m) after nine years in the team," Calderon told Goal.

"It is a pity because he is showing in Italy that he is still one of the best in the world. That attitude and his natural conditions make him unbeatable. Without a doubt, he is an example for young people who aspire to succeed in the sport."

Eden Hazard, who joined Real Madrid in 2019 and was tipped to be Ronaldo's replacement, has struggled to make an impact since his big-money move from Chelsea, scoring just three goals for the club so far.

The Belgian has been hampered by injuries since his arrival, making just 28 appearances across all competitions.
