Girona chief: 'Real Madrid game will go ahead as planned'

Girona chief: 'Madrid game will go ahead'
Girona president Delfi Geli expects Sunday afternoon's league clash against champions Real Madrid at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi to go ahead as originally planned.

Girona president Delfi Geli has insisted that Sunday afternoon's La Liga clash with Real Madrid will "be played with all normality", despite the ongoing political tension in Catalonia.

The fallout from the recent controversial referendum continues to be felt in the region, where the newly-promoted club play their home games.

In the wake of the Catalan government declaring independence, there had been suggestions in the local press that the visit of champions Madrid may be postponed until a later date.

Geli expects the game at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi to go ahead as originally planned, however, telling Radio COPE: "We are preparing for the game to be played.

"It will be played with all normality and will be a football festival. The fans are waiting for the visit of Real Madrid and they want to enjoy Girona in La Liga."

Girona's mayor Marta Madrenas also confirmed that there are no plans in place to postpone the match, scheduled to get under way at 3.15pm UK time on Sunday.
