John Carver: 'Newcastle United should have had a penalty against Liverpool'

Newcastle United manager John Carver criticises referee Lee Mason for failing to award his side a "stonewall" penalty in Monday's defeat away at Liverpool.

Newcastle United manager John Carver has criticised referee Lee Mason for failing to award his side a "stonewall" penalty in their 2-0 defeat away at Liverpool.

The Magpies, downed in Monday's game at Anfield by goals in each half from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen, were denied a spot kick in the 38th minute when appeals following Dejan Lovren's tackle in the box on Ayoze Perez were waved away.

Carver told Sky Sports News after the game: "I thought it was good reaction after last weekend. We had energy and caused Liverpool some real problems.

"It was a huge decision that changed the game when Ayoze Perez went down under Dejan Lovren's challenge. I thought it was stonewall and looking back at it, it was."

Newcastle remain 13th in the table following the defeat at Anfield, their fifth in a row.
