Louis van Gaal plays down rumours David de Gea could join Real Madrid

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal plays down speculation surrounding David de Gea's future.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has rejected suggestions that goalkeeper David de Gea could join Real Madrid this month.

The Spain international was close to moving to the Bernabeu last summer, but the deal fell through at the last minute as paperwork was not filed by the transfer deadline.

In a dramatic U-turn, the shot-stopper signed a new long-term deal at Old Trafford, but Madrid's interest in the player has not gone away.

The Spanish giants, along with local rivals Atletico Madrid, have been banned from registering new players as both clubs have breached rules in relation to the signing of foreign players under the age of 18.

Both Real and Atletico intend to appeal the sanction, meaning that the ban, which prevents the signing of players next summer and in the January 2017 window, could be delayed.

This has sparked reports that Real will make a move for De Gea, as well as Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard.

When asked about the rumours, Van Gaal told reporters: "I don't know because I don't think that kind of thing plays in the mind of David de Gea. I have never thought that.

"Now I am seeing a De Gea who is enjoying to stay here at Manchester United and play good games."

De Gea is expected to start in Sunday's Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield.
